History

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated every year in the United States on the Fourth Thursday of November.

The First Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 in New England ( America) by the Pilgrims to celebrate a good harvest. The feast was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 pilgrims and lasted three days, during which eating, hunting and entertainment took place. There was no turkey! but they ate deers!

Thanksgiving was celebrated on and off until 1863 during the American Civil War when Abraham Lincoln by an act of Congress declared Thanksgiving a federal holiday.  Family and charity values are highlighted during  the festivities. Originally a religious celebration during which thanks to God were offered, it has now become a secular party.

Yet, whereas some gather in joy around a table full of food, others protest in the street to express their sadness and mourning. Indeed, for Native Americans Thanksgiving corresponds to the beginning of a cultural and human genocide, or  a period of colonisation. For some, the word echoes with horror, with the brutalities and atrocities committed to the Native people by the colonists
